Collioure, France

"The Église Notre-Dame-des-Anges at Collioure", ©2000
watercolor, 8" x 10" inches

The belfry of the church dominates the beach and port entrance at Collioure.   This picturesque town has been the center of the anchovy fishing industry for generations.  Modern fishing techniques have reduced the number of processor greatly.   This port renewed its importance when  several Parisian artists made stays here in the development of the modern style of painting known as "Fauvism".  This French expressionist technique used high key colors with a boldness that was startling to the more tradition bound collectors.  Artist such as Derain, Braque, Matisse, Friesz, Othon, and later Picasso came and worked in this bright southern light.  The painting here was done as homage to Matisse and Derain.
