Brugge,
Belgium
"The canal in Brugge, Belgium", © 2004
Elroy Christenson
The canal of the Dijver in Brugge connects various areas of
the town to one another with the Belfry or Halles Tower in
the background. It was the Venice of the north. It also is
one of few cities of the north which avoided devastation
from the various wars that rained havoc down on most of the
rest of Belgium. The city has many remarkable works from its
Spanish and early powerful trading centered culture. A
sculpture work by Michelangelo is in the Church of Our Lady
and St. John's Hospital has works by Hans Memling. Religious
and historical sites are in abundance.
