The Lakes District, Great Britain

Pattersdale Farm

"A Lakes District Farm" © photo by Elroy Christenson 1999

The Lakes District of northwestern England is frequently very wet and generally uncrowded compared with other parts of England. It is consequently a place where boy scout troops come to do there camping and hiking trips. Hostels and small hotels in the area provide rustic amenities to the less adventurous. This region has been an inspiration to many writers, poets and artists.

These areas were most loved by William Wordsworth , Samuel Taylor Coleridge , and Robert Southey.  John Ruskin, the writer and promoter of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was raised and died in the area around Coniston Water.  Beatrix Potter, although born in London, lived most of her life in the area.
