Pashupatinath temple, Nepal

Pashupatinath temple, Kathmundu

"Pashupatinath Temple complex, Kathmundu Valley"
© photo by Elroy Christenson 1999

This Hindu temple is dedicated to Shiva.  It is said to be one of the oldest Hindu temples in the Kathmundu Valley perhaps going back to at least 400 ad.  The main temple has the golden roof while the Bagmati river that runs through the complex is said to connect to the Ganges, making it one of the head waters of the holy river.  To be cremated here and have your ashes pushed into the river in front of the red roofed buildings in the center of the photo would be particularly auspicious.  The white roofed structures in the front of the photo each contains a lingam and yoni, Shivas symbol of fertility.
