Romedal, Hedmark,
Norway
"Store houses at the Romedal Priest's House"(
photo) ©2016 photo Elroy Christenson
These storage buildings are much
older than the church and the other buildings on
the farm. The farm lands and most of the
buildings are now owned by a young local couple
who are in the process of remodeling the lower
house. The land adjoins the Rønne farm
of his father and grandfather.
These kinds of buildings are still in existence
all over Norway. They were elevated to keep
the food stuffs above snow and away from the rats
and other animals that would endanger their winter
stores. These stores were mostly for the
human occupants and included smoked and dried
meats, dried fish, dries fruits, flour, corn meal,
and potatoes. Most have now been relegated to
storing skis and non-perishable equipment rather
than food since modern refrigerators and freezers
handle the winter food stores. Many can be
observed with trees growing from the roofs.
