"Place of Refuge", Kona Coast, Big
Island, Hawaii
"Pu'uhonua o Honaunau
National Historical Park,
Hawaii" This place is a culturally
important place to the native Hawaiians. The
legend of the ancient site was that if someone was a
wanted for a crime that they committed they could swim
their way across "shark's den" bay. If they
survived the priest had to offer them sanctuary and
"absolved them any wrong doing". There is a small
admission fee. Turtles and exotic fish also swim in the
bay just outside the park and it is a popular picnic
spot for the locals. |
