Cranfills Gap, Texas
"Rock Church, Cranfills Gap, Texas"
The Rock Church, as it is
locally known, is officially Old St. Olaf's Lutheran
Church. The congregation moved to a new building and
location in Cranfills Gap but this building remains as a
registered historical site. It was built by Norwegian
immigrants in 1884 from local limestone. This region
of Texas is recognized as a major Scandinavian
community. The church continues to celebrate the
traditional Christmas dinner of lutefisk and potatoes
smothered in butter. Many of my own relatives are buried
here. My grandfather Evan Rohne, Norwegian
immigrant, is buried to the right front.
