Galapagos, Ecuador

land iguana Galapagos

"Land Iguanas of Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos" ©2015 photo Elroy Christenson

The land iguanas of the Galapagos are somewhat more normal as a form of iguana compared to the marine iguanas.  They may have found their way to the Galapagos on floating debry from the mainland but probably thousands of years ago.  They were probably the originators of the marine iguana species that evolved from them.  They love to eat the flowers of the cactii and lay in wait in the shade for the flower buds to fall to the ground.  This particular iguans is bolting into its new skin.
