The houses in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra are all carved over the entire exterior surface.  The maintenance in this terribly wet environment has be an on-going and rather expensive proposition.   The artisans are trained from a very early age.  The designs are demanding of a great deal of skill using what appears to us using rather primitive tools.
