"Saqsaywaman. Cusco, Peru" © 2015 photo Elroy Christenson The complex of Saqsaywaman
seems to be more of a palace than a temple. It
sits on a hill overlooking the city of Cusco. It
was constructed with stones that are incredibly
large. It is as remarkable in building technique
as is Stonehenge in England. It was apparently
built by the Killke people who came into the area about
900 CE. They put up these structures which were of
religious and military use about 1100 CE. The Inca came
in about the 13th century and imposed their organization
and added onto the earlier structures here and in the
city below. Unfortunately the weather was
terrible while we were here with pouring rain and rather
cold.
