Oslo, Norway
"Oslo Boats"

The boats of Oslo are moored in a
public area near the Fram Museum and the Kon-Tiki
Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula. The Norwegian
sailors became known for their good seamanship and
adventurous nature. The Fram ship is actually
housed inside the museum and was a ship that made
several trips to the Arctic. It was designed
to specifically be able to handle the pressure of
the ice flows they would encounter.
The Kon-Tiki Museum was built to commemorate the
ethnological studies and the 5000 mile raft voyage
of Thor Heyerdahl from South America to French
Polynesia in 1947. His work was earth shaking
for it's proof that Polynesia could have been
settled by natives from South America rather than
from Asia.
In this same Bygdøy complex of museums and public
activities is also the Viking Ship Museum. It
holds two nearly perfectly preserved and resurrected
Viking ships. It also includes many richly
carved items that came from the burial mound from
which the Oseberg Ship was excavated.
