This area of Philadelphia is "the oldest residential street" in the nation.  It was established in 1702 after two blacksmith, John Gilbert and Arthur Wells, decided to take parts of their properties to create access from the river to Second Street.  It has building that were build as part of a working quarter for the city.  Often times several families would live in a single home.  Today it is a historic district with museums and mixed residences.
