"The Drowned Forest of Alert Bay"
copyright 2004 Elroy Christenson

Alert Bay on Comorant Island is mostly noted for the many totem poles and the tallest totem pole erected by the local native population.  The U'mista Cultural Center in the town houses some major pieces of the "first people" and the town is governed by the native council.   This particular forest in on one of highest points on the island and is the remains of an industrial canning operation that ruined the land.  It has been turned into a city park and is noted for its bird watching.  It has a boardwalk through the marshy landscape and few picnic spots.
